- OUR FAMILIES SHARE STORIES OF SUCCESS AT VARIETY FAR:
“Before joining FAR, Drew could barely walk. Playing hockey gave him confidence, helped with his balance, allowed him to try other things. Now he can ride a bike, roller blade, ski...” “You never have seen happier girls than when they heard they were going to see ‘Hanna Montana’ with the Young Adult Club. They screamed right out loud in the restaurant. My girls love YAC. They have so much fun.” “It was the first time [for] my 4-year-old son (severely speech and language delayed). He kept saying over and over ‘baseball fun.’ All three of my children had huge smiles on their faces the whole time.” “Lizzie loves band and music therapy. Thanks for adding to her life!” “Lauren cried when Camp FAR Out was over. She loves it so much, she never wanted it to end.” She loves her art, Elizabeth says, “because it makes me proud of myself.” Her mother credits the music therapy that Elizabeth has participated in at FAR for directly helping her daughter with her new business of selling her art by improving her communication, sequencing and motor skills.

Recently, our long-time music student, Jenny, was featured in a Hometown Newspaper article entitled “Volunteer ‘gives back’ while coping with her own challenges.” For the past year, Jenny has been sharing the skills she learned in music therapy at FAR by playing piano at a traumatic brain injury day-care facility. “She loves it,” a staff member commented. “She has the desire to do this and our Danny, who is also impaired, just loves her. You can’t help but stop and listen when she plays piano. When you hear her, you get goose bumps.” Jenny has expanded her volunteer activities to include reading to the clients, helping out with office work and even vacuuming. “In life we all know we have to give to receive and she is truly giving from her heart,” said the staff member. “There is not a day that watching her with our clients doesn’t bring a tear to my eye.” Jenny was the opening act in Flutes one year, playing a piece she composed herself entitled “Jenny’s Song.” Certainly, there were quite a few tears in eyes at that performance as well.
